‘Adulting’ In The Modern World

Welcome back to The Squeeze! Today’s episode is about something we’ve all grappled with: young adulthood and the challenges that come with it. High school, with its predictable rules and expectations, offers a sanctuary of sorts from adult responsibilities. But what happens when you graduate, and that world is suddenly replaced by the vast expanse of uncharted territory called adulthood?

Our guest today is someone very close to my heart: my step-daughter Hannah. At 27, she has already experienced a great deal of what young adulthood has to offer, both the highs and the lows. In our raw conversation, Hannah unpacks her experience navigating this complex stage of life. We delve into the anxiety and uncertainty many young adults face when deciding what comes next. We discuss the added pressures of a modern world, including the psychological effects of social media and the economic realities for today’s youth, particularly in the lower mainland on the west coast.

Our discussion is an opportunity to better understand the challenges that young adults face in today’s world. It’s a frank exploration of the pressures and expectations that come with ‘adulting’. And while some might argue that these are not new problems, they are certainly unique in their manifestation in today’s society.

And as with everything I share on the podcast, this is what I believe based on what I’ve read and researched. But please don’t take my word for it. Keep what sticks, discard the rest and for goodness sakes, go out and test drive it!

What You’ll Learn In Today’s Episode:

  • What we can learn about human nature from movies.

  • The biggest barrier for young people trying to find their own path.

  • What advice Hannah would give herself if she could travel back in time.

  • The big game-changer for Hannah’s overall mindset.

  • The toll social media takes on mental health.
